5 Winter Hair Care Tips - Aashi Beauty
If you live in a climate that experiences all four seasons, then you know how beautiful yet harsh winter can be to your skin and hair. Typically, during the winter months, skin care becomes a big focus as no one wants dry skin. However, hair often gets forgotten about, despite being able to feel the physical differences such as dry, dull, brittle hair. The cold, dry, moisture-robbing air, snow, wind and rain can dry your hair making it more prone to breakage, and scalp dryness which can cause dandruff. Similarly to our skin, our hair needs to be protected from the winter environmental elements such as the cold dry air, snow, rain and wind. Let’s dive into 5 winter hair care tips that will help you gain control of your hair care game.
  1. Get hair trims

The best way to care for your hair is to get hair trims regularly, especially during the winter months. During the colder months, we often find ourselves wearing toques, hats, and coats with big collars, which can cause friction and often leads to hair breakage. Additionally, the colder weather can cause the ends of your hair to be dry and brittle. So, getting hair trims will ensure that your ends are healthy and intact. Allowing it to grow back beautifully!

  2. Avoid frequent hair washes & be mindful of the water temperature

If you’re the type of person that washes their hair daily, it’s time to make some changes (and we mean this in the best way possible). Overwashing your hair can strip the natural oils which keep your hair moisturized and protected. Avoid frequent hair washes and extend the time between each wash. Typically, it’s recommended that you wash your hair 2-3 times a week. There is no magic formula for what day you should wash your hair, but it will require some trial and error to find a schedule that works for your lifestyle! You could wash it every other day, or every two days. However, make adjustments as needed based on the needs of your hair! PS - don’t forget that we have access to amazing hair products such as dry shampoo which can be used to refresh hair and absorb the extra oils.

In addition to lessening the frequency you wash your hair, another very important part to be mindful of is the water temperature! Personally, I love a steamy hot shower, especially in the colder months. However, hot water can suck out the moisture from the hair making it vulnerable to breakage. So, what's the temperature at which you should wash your hair? Lukewarm water, followed by a cold rinse! I know, I know - you may be thinking, “cold rinse” in the winter?! Why?! Well, cold rinses have amazing benefits for the skin & hair! In terms of our hair, cold water will seal down the cuticles making the hair look and feel shinier.

  3. Do weekly hair treatments

Committing to weekly hair treatments will be the ultimate game changer for your hair health. Doing so will not only treat and correct your hair, but they’re a great preventative measure as well. As you know by now, during the winter months, the scalp can become dry which causes dandruff, scalp irritation and flakiness. Making your hair even more vulnerable to breakage and damage. Weekly treatments will help to keep the scalp hydrated, nourished and healthy! You can do these treatments in the form of hair masks, hair oils or leave-in conditioners.

Hair treatments can instantly revitalize dry, damaged hair. Ingredients such as egg, honey, coconut oil, vitamin E oil, peppermint oil, argan oil, castor oil, rosemary, thyme and tea tree, are all great for hair health. Doing massages will improve blood circulation to the scalp which can stimulate hair growth. And anytime you use an oil treatment we recommend doing a double shampoo the next day to ensure all the oil is out. The key is to keep the scalp as hydrated and moisturized as possible, and this is very much doable by doing treatments one-two times a week.

  4. Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Silk is softer than cotton and linen thanks to its filament fibre. The smooth silky texture has so many benefits for both hair and skin! Silk will help the hair retain moisture from products and natural oils, and reduce friction that could cause tangles and breakages. It also helps to prevent frizz! Slik is especially great for the skin as it can help to prevent wrinkles and retain hydration and moisture. At Aashi Beauty we are proud to ethically source and create our 100% pure silk pillowcases and vegan silk pillowcases. We’ve partnered with local WOC seamstresses and are so proud of the partnership we’ve built!

  5. Use a humidifier

During the colder months as the temperatures drop, we turn up the heat to add warmth back into our space. Room heaters especially are great as they can add warmth quickly, however, they can dry out the air causing damage to our skin, hair and scalp. A great way to fix this is by using a humidifier! They help to balance the moisture levels inside the room which will prevent dryness, allowing more moisture to be pushed into your hair, skin and scalp!

During the winter months, our hair and scalp often becomes dry, brittle and dull. Similar to our skin, our hair needs to be protected and cared for from winter environmental elements. Typically, during these months we focus so much on our skincare,  but neglect the hair, leading it to become more vulnerable. Using the 5 tips above, you can care for your hair and improve its condition during the colder months. After all, our hair deserves as much love as our skin!
